Where do seniors meet seniors?

It is a truth that a lot more folks meet online today than at social events or even at function and this is primarily correct of seniors. A surprising percentage of boomers are searching for a brand new relationship and locate it on-line. I can vouch for that, it is actually where my wife and I met six and also a half years ago now and it has been the an awesome move for us.

Seniors Meet Seniors On line Accomplishment Story.

I had been out of a 39 year marriage and had four youngsters Gemma had divorced 16 years just before and had two youngsters. Not surprisingly all the ‘kids’ had been grown up and had relationships and families of their own. Two singles, free of charge to locate new loves and new adventures. I was 60 and had ‘run residence to mom!’. It was one of my daughters who suggested that if I sat watching the Television night following night I’d soon be old prior to my time.

Carrying out Absolutely nothing Was Tempting

Immediately after 40 years of ‘homemaking’ sitting nevertheless and letting the globe go by was incredibly tempting but you know it’s predicted that our generation will live long lives, possibly to 100 and 40 years of becoming a couch potato appears a lot more like a prison sentence than an ambition so I subscribed to a dating web site.

Write an Honest Profile

Considering I had by no means accomplished anything like this ahead of I made a very good selection, I had an ‘allowance’ of 1000 characters to write my profile, I would use each one of them and write a full and honest profile. I laid it all out, who I am, my age, how I got to be exactly where I’m at this time, what I like, what I dislike, what I do for entertaining, what I’m seeking in a relationship all open all honest.

Look for an Honest Profile

How can you know after you are looking at an honest profile? Nicely you can’t. Some people are just playing about and there is certainly absolutely nothing wrong with that – that is what they want from the internet site, different experiences, a little of fun but it wasn’t what I wanted. I was prepared to ‘kiss several frogs’ before I located my sleeping beauty but care sifting through the replies that came in each day on my e-mail account meant I didn’t have to.

One in a Million

The site sent me some matches and one match was wonderful, she had worked just as tough as I had on her own profile. The site told me she was a one-in-a-million match to me and so it turned out. We met and wooed and two years later got engaged. We married just two years ago and as you’ll conclude for this it was the very best move I could have produced.

Goodbye to the Quiet Life – Hello Adventure

Now everyday is usually a excellent day, we strategy our holidays, work on our business together, on our property and enjoy a wonderful ‘extended family life.

When Seniors Meet Seniors and they strike a good bond they bring one thing to their new relationship that they in no way had ahead of – expertise. Encounter of generating mistakes as well as a determination not to create those mistakes once again. You may have guessed that I heartily advocate it, in case you are a senior considering dating late in life don’t delay, somewhere around is a great relationship for you and all you’ve got to complete is reach out for it and live life towards the full again.

Healthy Living – Slow the Ageing Process

In the fast pace busy society we currently live in, we have become a society of very busy people with too much to do in very little time.  This lack of time is used as the excuse for not staying fit and healthy. We often grab fast food, substitute water for fatty or sugary drinks, never take thirty minutes out of our hectic day for exercise, and convince ourselves we are too busy to get enough sleep or even tend to bathroom needs immediately. Our fast paced diet has very little nutritional value often with far too little fiber, and our bodies don’t get enough movement for muscle toning and good cardio vascular health. We don’t even consume the required amount of vitamins and minerals the human body needs everyday to function properly and remain healthy. Our diets often are loaded with chemicals and we don’t get enough sleep or water for our bodies to heal and purge all the toxins.

Because of all this, we are becoming an overweight and sick society. Type II diabetes is effecting the young as fast as obesity, with more and more people now taking blood pressure medicine and depression medication than ever before. Pain medication used for arthritis and other related illnesses is netting billions of dollars a year to the pharmaceutical companies. Vitamin deficiency is very common these days, meaning that our bodies are actually aging much faster than our chronological ages.

There is no miracle cure or tablet out there to help solve this problem.  There is however a simple way to getting healthy and look your age (or even younger) in the process. It requires hard work and dedication, but can easily be achieved if you put your mind to it. Below is a list of things you need to do to regain your health and slow the ageing process:

1.      Drink eight glasses of water every day

There really isn’t enough that can be said about the importance of drinking water. Water hydrates the body and helps to cleanse and heal the body. Water is extremely important in controlling blood sugar levels. Other drinks do not work nearly as well as water in this endeavor, and some, such as soda or high sugar drinks, can have the opposite effects. Water also helps your skin retain its elasticity, so you can have healthier, younger looking skin just by drinking enough water.

2.      Eat all the things your body needs. Use supplements (vitamin, mineral or fiber) when necessary and avoid eating things that actually harm your body

Regardless of the health issues you may currently have, whether it is high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type I or II diabetes, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, or any other problem, there are foods that you definitely should eat and foods you shouldn’t. Find out what they are and eat all the foods you should.  A dietitian can help here. Also, keep in mind that you may need to consume some supplements, which is quite normal for any individual. Also, try consuming as much organic food as possible. One thing few people can get, no matter how good their food intake, is enough vitamins and minerals, so take a vitamin, preferably in liquid form, every day.

3.      Exercise thirty minutes a day, walking, bike riding or even dancing would do

We all need to move and be active! While this may seems a little too simple, getting up and moving is one of the best ways to keep your body healthy. Your body needs to burn as many or more calories than its consumes, depending on whether or not you need to lose some immediate weight, but you should never consume so few calories that you are cutting necessary nutrients, so use exercise to burn more instead of eating too little. Movement and any other form of exercise can help keeps your muscles toned, help those joints, and help your blood circulation. Walking is one of the best exercises, but even cleaning your house does require you to move and use energy, as does dancing, walking your dog or even a simple bike ride.

4.      Go to the bathroom immediately when you feel the urge

Going to the bathroom is extremely important, as it helps your body get rid of toxins and to stop plaque from building up on your intestinal walls. That’s one reason the colon cleanse has become so popular. Also, letting your bladder stay too full for extended amounts of time can cause costly medical problems. For example, simply failing to empty your bladder often enough could cost you a surgery. Not fun.

5.      Find 10-15 minutes a day to relax and switch off everyday life (meditation or some relaxation music can help here)

Finding a quite time in the day (whether it is in the morning, afternoon or night) to sit down and relax a little can help wind down and reduce your stress levels. Doing simple things such as closing your eyes and breathing slowly, while removing all thoughts from your mind can do wonders. Try this with some calming music if you cannot relax.

6.      Get at least eight hours sleep a night

Like water, the importance of enough sleep cannot be overestimated. Your body needs sleep to repair all those little things that happen to it each day – no sleep means no repair. Lack of sleep also has affects on your body such as making you feel hungry the next day, mostly for sugars. Did you ever notice how candy bars and sodas can keep you going late night if you feel like you have to keep yourself awake to finish that project? Same thing happens to you the next day if you don’t get enough sleep; your body craves fast energy to keep going after it has run out of energy and needs repair time. So, just don’t give up the sleep for anything.

You may ask yourself, “it cannot be that easy?”.  Well the simple truth is that if it was really that easy, we would all be thin and healthy. The hard thing isn’t actually doing all the above points, but actually wanting to do them. It often takes a major health risk to realize how important a healthy lifestyle can actually be.

If you do the above, after just two weeks your body will start to normalize and start feeling much better and healthier.  In the longer term, you will not only feel better, you will start looking healthier and younger in the process!!!

It is important though before making such changes to your lifestyle to consult your doctor first, especially prior to commencing an exercise program.

Activities for Retired Seniors

Retirement can be seen as a new beginning, giving you the ability to do things you would have not been able to do while employed. Any doctor would vouch that an active mind is as important as an active body. Seniors and any retired person make the extra effort to stimulate their minds and of course maintain good physical health. If you’re a retired senior, you’ll be on the lookout for activities that are fun and invigorating. Below you will find a long list of activities that can help you achieve that:

Movies and Books – Good humorous movies or a mystery novel can really get the adrenaline flowing in your body. Rake in all the humor and fun you can get from life. A Jim Carrey movie can very well keep them in fantastic spirits.
Use the Internet – Internet for seniors is without a doubt the best friend while alone. You can participate in several activities like playing online games, shopping, chat online, reading online news, and staying in touch with love-ones through simple email, video calls and chat. Such conveniences can really close distances and make you feel less isolated.

Mind Games – There are numerous enjoyable mind games that can keep seniors occupied. Crossword puzzles, word games like scrabble, or other quizzes can be very absorbing. If a senior is physically impaired, then board games can make way for simple trivia and riddles.

Going Down Memory Lane – Going through old photos is a great way to relive past happy moments. You can go down memory lane whenever you miss family and friends. Pleasant memories work wonders for loneliness and can help uplift moods.

Music, Art and other Hobbies – Post-retirement is the best time to get into interests that always hoped to get into, but never had the opportunity to due to other commitments. These can involve painting, arts and crafts, and music. It’s never too late to tap into your hidden talents. Fulfill every wish you’ve ever had, and satisfy your inner desires.

Travel – With lots of free time on your hands, it’s time for you to go explore new places. Take a leisure trip to the Greek Islands or soak in some sun, surf and sea down under in Australia. If you’re physically fit to travel, you should get going.

Climb the Highest Mountain – Well this is not for the faint hearted, but remember Hulda Crooks was 91 years old when she climbed Mt. Whitney, the highest mountain in the continental United States.

Write a Book – Jessie Lee Brown Foveaux sold her first book at the prime age of ninety eight years old, making a small fortune.  The great grandmother, an unschooled and unskilled writer turned a memoir she wrote in a writing class for citizens into a book.

Find an Enjoyable Part-Time Job – this isn’t essential, but if you do get bored at home, finding a fun job just to fill in a few days a weeks would be a fun idea.

Friendships – Maintain old friendships and create new friends.  This will help you share your experiences and have some fun!

Stay Fit – Indulge in some regular exercise (strenuous if you can, but after clearing it with your doctor) so that you will be physically fit to enjoy your retirement activities.

Bingo – If you find a group of likeminded bingo players, you can make this a regular activity. It can be fun to have a few drinks at your local bingo place, play a few games of bingo & catch up with all your friends.

Take up Gardening – Ask any gardener who is serious about their craft and they will tell you it can easily be a full time endeavor. If you live in an area with a winter environment, you can dedicate a room in your house just for gardening.

Learn something new - If there is something you always wanted to learn but felt that you didn’t have the time, now you do. Take a dance class, a pottery class or another class that will teach you what you always wanted to learn.

Volunteer – If you have the time and strength, why not do some volunteer work a few days a week (don’t have to be full days).  You can volunteer at your local library, church, zoo, museum, school, an elderly hostel or even a hospital.  Why not learn something you did want to learn but never got around to, doing something totally different to whatever you did during your working life.

Why Seniors Should Log Into The Internet

There may be some seniors who’d disagree, but it doesn’t change the fact that the Internet is immensely useful to them. It’s best to throw away any inhibition or reluctance and master the computer, since it can be your friend for all seasons. Let’s analyze the areas in which the Internet can benefit you, especially when you’re past 60 and retired.

1) Internet Banking- This is the best thing that the Internet offers. With the facility of net banking, seniors don’t have to visit the bank to update passbooks, or even transfer money. You can check your account details online and also get periodic updates of your account statement through email. Almost every bank gives its customer the facility of Internet banking.

2) Filing Taxes Online- Who isn’t annoyed with tons of paperwork? Especially in times when you’d want relax and dispense with chores easily; you’re not looking to fill papers. Thankfully, you can now file your taxes online and dispense with any paperwork. Just get online and fill relevant forms and submit your taxes online.

3) Social Networking- Internet gives you tons of choices to stay in touch with friends and family. Easy email for seniors, chatting, voice chats, VoIP calls, and bonding with old friends through social networking sites. Internet can really bridge distances.

4) Online Shopping- You’ll find plenty of discount deals and a wider variety of products when you shop online. With shipping facilities available your purchases are delivered at your doorstep. With safe web browsing software available, it’s not that risky to surf the web and shop online.

5) Active Mind- Post-retirement there’s every possibility you are trying to kill time. Get on to the Internet and play online mind games when you’re bored. An active mind is especially vital as age catches up.

Every benefit stated above makes life a lot simpler, so you can’t discount such advantages in any way. You’ve got plenty of reasons here to get hooked on to the web world immediately.

Benefits Of Exercise For Seniors

Working with older adults, in the care sector I have seen many changes over the last six years. The most encouraging of these is the growing recognition that physical activity has an important part to play in later life and EVEN in residential care.

Motivating older adults to join an exercise session is not usually an easy task, in fact I often have comments such as: “I’ve done my exercise young man” and “I spent 50 years in the Navy, why should I exercise now?”. This may deter those who are not confident enough in their knowledge of this subject. With the correct training, however, people can learn to recognize the abilities and limitations of their special clients and gain the skills required to encourage participation and ensure the mobility exercises are not childish but are rewarding and enjoyable.

Talking from experience, the results are rarely predictable: some clients become a little stronger, more flexible and gain confidence in their balance, others receive psychological benefits such as feeling happier, more inclined to interact and having an appetite. Of course there are those who won’t get either type of benefit and also those who will get both. Whatever the outcome, it’s important not to give up – for each person, every day is different and their next attempt may well surprise you – and them!

In the drive towards person-centred care it’s extremely important that all service users are offered the opportunity to exercise. There are a number of barriers, or ‘opportunities’ as I prefer to call them, but these are not necessarily linked to race, gender age or disability. Many seniors will NOT consider participating in an organised physical activity due to feelings of depression and a lack of confidence – these are understandable but need to be overcome as regular activity, even seated exercise, will help to reduce these symptoms and add to a persons quality of life.

If you start with the right approach, a person should show some level of interest, which can be built upon and no matter how slight this may be, there is hope. The next task is to motivate that person to participate in some form of mental or physical exercise and afterwards they should feel that they have achieved something and enjoyed themselves.

Similar to the leisure industry, the care sector is changing and developing and while the media keep telling us that there are potential benefits of exercise for all age groups, I have seen an encouraging improvement in providing a variety of therapeutic activities for older adults in residential care.

On that happy note there are many home managers, activity coordinators and carers who deserve a ‘pat on the back’ for ensuring activities are for life, not just entertainment.
